FORM 2290 – HEAVY HIGHWAY VEHICLE USE TAX (HVUT)

IRS Form 2290, the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, is a mandatory federal filing for vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more operating on public highways. It is used to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) or claim an exemption. The return is typically due by August 31st for the tax year beginning in July.

IFTA (INTERNATIONAL FUEL TAX AGREEMENT)

Commercial motor vehicles traveling in more than one U.S. state or Canadian province must file a consolidated report of motor fuel taxes under IFTA. This includes gasoline, diesel fuel, liquefied gas, compressed natural gas, and liquefied natural gas.

Due Date: IFTA returns are due quarterly, on the last day of the month following the end of each calendar quarter. If the due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the next business day becomes the due date.

Renewal: IFTA accounts must be renewed each January.

INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION PLAN (IRP)

The International Registration Plan is a method for registering fleets of vehicles that operate in two or more member jurisdictions. Fees are calculated based on the miles traveled in each jurisdiction and other required factors.

Renewal: IRP credentials must be renewed annually for the new license year. Motor Carrier Services sends reminder notices 30–45 days before expiration.

Requirements: Proof of residency and proof of Form 2290 payment are required.

Where to Renew: Renewals are typically completed online or through your local DMV or Motor Carrier Services office.
